Art and Design

“Art develops spiritual values and contributes a wider understanding to the experience of life, which helps to build a balanced personality".

Bridget Riley, Painter

Art and Design stimulates creativity and imagination. It provides visual, tactile and sensory experiences and a unique way of understanding and responding to the world we live in. Pupils use colour, form, texture, pattern, shape and different materials and processes to communicate what they see, feel and think. They explore ideas and meaning in the work of a wide range of artists and designers. They learn about the diverse roles and functions of art, craft and design in contemporary life and in different times and cultures.

We have a strong team of experienced and enthusiastic teachers in the Art Department who have a range of specialisms to support the students during their creative development.

  • Mr A Hadden (Head of Art and Teacher of Art and Photography)
  • Ms L Bramble (Teacher of Art)
  • Ms L Lee (Teacher of Art and Photography)
  • Mrs A Skipper (Teacher of Art and Textiles)
  • Miss R Whitaker (Teacher of Art and Textiles)

Key Stage Three

Students are taught in mixed ability groups in Years 7, 8 and in Year 9.

During Key Stage 3 pupils develop their creativity and imagination through more sustained activities. These learning objectives and outcomes help them build on, and improve their practical and critical skills, and to extend their knowledge and experience of materials, process and practice. They become more independent in using visual language to communicate their own ideas, feelings and meanings. Students are encouraged to refine and reflect, building up more confident technical skills as well as analysing and documenting personal opinions on the work of other artists and their own work as it progresses. A wide range of skills, techniques and processes from drawing and painting to ceramics and printmaking are introduced into the Key Stage 3 curriculum

Key Stage Four

Students may opt to specialise in one or more area within the Art, Craft and Design title or Photography in Year 10. They may opt for Photography as a second creative GCSE if they have already chosen Art, Craft and Design. Classes are mixed ability and inclusive. The titles are project-based and sequential giving the students the opportunity to explore their own ideas, approaches and technical development in response to a range of topics or themes. Students are encouraged to work in traditional sketchbooks for art-based study and digital sketchbooks for photography, and work at all times from direct observation. The main aim of each individual title is to develop the creative and imaginative powers, and practical skills for communicating and expressing ideas, feelings and meaning in art, craft and design.

Art, Craft and Design

This is an excellent general introduction to the study of art, craft and design. You’ll look at different approaches to art and use lots of different media, techniques and materials. You are required to study two or more titles: We offer a combination of Fine Art, Textiles, Printmaking and Photography, but you are welcome to explore many aspects of the creative process.

Photography

Produce images using light-sensitive materials such as photographic film, or digital methods of development and production to create static or moving images. Areas of study could include portraiture, installation, photo-journalism, moving image: film, video and animation and fashion photography.

Accommodation and Resources

The department has three medium sized rooms, one fully operational dark room and a specialist textiles room. There is a small clay area with one operational kiln.

Each room is well resourced and equipped to teach a range of subjects at Key Stage 3 and more specialist subjects such as photography and printmaking at KS4 and 5.

Reepham benefits from the “scrap box” facility, and it is used to resource a wide range of material to offer a range of potential outcomes within the coursework projects at all Key Stages.

Extra-curricular Activity and Trips

Student’s experience of the creative environment is often enhanced by visit to galleries. To develop their own practice and give them the experience of seeing art first hand a number of trips are organised throughout the year:

  • Gallery and exhibition visits to support both coursework and exam preparation
  • The school has strong links with the Castle Museum and the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts as well as annual exhibitions such as the Norwich Print Fair. Students are encouraged to visit exhibitions and Galleries as part of their commitment to learning outside the classroom. The school also work closely with Norwich University of the Arts.

As an art department we also actively encourage students to enter a number of local and national competitions throughout the year. Students have access to the art rooms at lunchtime and after school to continue their practice.
