Design and Technology

Within Design and Technology pupils develop designing and making skills using a range of materials, learn about Electronics, Engineering, CAD/CAM, Food & Nutrition, Sustainability and Textiles Technology.

They also develop business critical skills in problem-solving, innovation and team-work.

We have a strong, dedicated team who have a range of specialisms to support students to help them achieve their full potential.

Key Stage Three

Each of the four Technology disciplines is taught by a specialist teacher. Pupils develop a range of design and making skills, fabricating products using applicable materials. Teaching groups in Years 7, 8 and in Year 9 are mixed ability. The groups rotate around the technology areas four times every year, spending approximately 18 hours in each discipline.

Each area specialises in a different material – Resistant Materials (wood metal and plastics), Graphic Products (card, plastics and computer graphics), Textiles (fabric) and Food.

Key Stage Four

Pupils are taught in mixed ability groups for the two years. In Year 10 and 11 pupils receive five hours per fortnight of their option subject.

Design & Technology

The Design and Technology prepares students to participate confidently and successfully in an increasingly technological world. Students will gain awareness and learn from wider influences on Design and Technology including historical, social, cultural, environmental and economic factors. Students will get the opportunity to work creatively when designing and making and apply technical and practical expertise.

This GCSE allows students to study core technical and designing and making principles, including a broad range of design processes, materials techniques and equipment. They will also have the opportunity to study specialist technical principles in greater depth.

Food Preparation and Nutrition

Food and Nutrition equips learners with the knowledge, understanding and skills required to cook and apply the principles of food science, nutrition and healthy eating. It encourages learners to cook and enables them to make informed decisions about food and nutrition and allows them to acquire knowledge in order to be able to feed themselves and others affordably and nutritiously, now and later in life. It will allow the students to understand the huge challenges that we face globally to supply the world with nutritious and safe food.

Construction

This qualification is for pupils wishing to gain some understanding and some practical experience of the variety of trades in the Construction industry. The qualifications cover a range of hand-skills and practical tasks in the following trade areas: 

  • Bricklaying
  • Carpentry and Joinery

Accommodation and Resources

The Technology department is made up of four specialist rooms and all are equipped with subject relevant equipment. We have a well-equipped food and catering room, a textiles room with sublimation printing, a design studio with a full Adobe suite and CAD/CAM facilities, a second design studio with metal workshop facilities with a heat treatment area, lastly a more traditional workshop for working with timbers and plastics.
